Welcome Back!

FelixTheCatWallpaper1024

I hope everyone is returning well rested from a snowy February vacation!  We will be picking up our novel, The Watsons Go To Birmingham, right where we left off.  This novel will allow us to finish our discussion of the historical fiction genre while allowing us to explore 1960s culture and the struggle for Civil rights through video, music, and research using non-fiction books and articles.  We will also explore how authors develop characters and how by using what characters say and do we can infer their character traits.  We will also continue to explore vocabulary concepts while working on fluency and building reading stamina.

Today we got a taste of 60s culture as we checked out several songs and cartoons mentioned in the chapter.  Students should feel free to explore them further on Youtube- with your permission of course!  Songs/People/Programs mentioned include:

Yakety Yak, Under the Boardwalk, Nat King Cole, Dinah Washington, Walter Cronkite, Felix the Cat, Soupy Sales, Beany & Cecil, The Rae Deane Show, Betty Boop, Clutch Cargo
